Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
