EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
