Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
